After successfully concluding a sequence of bulk carrier Sea Trials, Concord, Ontario’s Ionada Inc. has announced that it has won a contract to supply its Membrane Scrubber exhaust gas cleaning system to outfit the NOLHANAVA, a carrier operated by MG Management.

The 6 MW Membrane Scrubber is expected to be delivered in Q4 of 2015.

“As a company operating in Atlantic Canada we understand the importance of protecting our ocean resources,” said MG Management’s Yvon Dufour. “We chose Ionada and their Membrane Scrubber for their the green environmental solution and their strong commitment to implementing the technology on our vessel.”

Ionada claims that its Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) technology is 50% smaller and 30% more efficient than comparable available technology.

Ionada’s membrane scrubber involves dry membrane gas separation and salt water or ionic liquids. It requires no chemicals and removes sulphur oxides using ionic capture technology.

The marine scrubber technology helps companies meet ECA (Emission Control Area) requirements while saving on fuel costs and preventing environmental challenges related to overboard discharge and simplifying the retrofit installation process.

“MG Management is a highly capable partner with a strong interest in seeing Canadian developed and engineered marine scrubber technology move forward,” said Ionada CEO Edoardo Panziera, adding, “This first commercial order marks an important milestone event in the history of our company. We are honored to have been awarded this opportunity.”

The implementation of scrubber technology for the shipping industry is going to be increasingly important as the ECA, covering North American and Western European waters, implements a 0.5% global sulphur cap for marine fuel to be enforced between 2020 and 2025.
