  • A US$25 million crowdfunded, student-led mission plans to send three CubeSat microsatellites all the way to Mars, landing time capsules on the surface of the Red Planet, that will contain the digital messages from tens of millions of people from all countries around the world. You can upload a picture of your own, up to 10 MB in size, by contributing just 99 cents.

  • Newly-Produced Nanocarriers Able to Carry Multiple Drugs Concurrently

  • In the production process of the nanocarrier, a new cationic ionic liquid that responds to a few triggers was produced through polymerization method firstly, and then it was attached to silicon nanoparticles and it was modified. Next, the nanoparticles were simultaneously attached to two anticancer drugs of doxorubicin (DOX) and methotrexate (MTX) through electrostatic interactions. HPLC-UV test was used to study the simultaneous release of the drugs.

  • A group of scientists in Iran has produced a new solid-phase extraction material incorporating a modified ionic liquid that is designed especially for one specific task: the extraction and preconcentration of lead from a variety of materials. Maryam Mohamadi, Asma Saljooqi, Tayebeh Shamspur and Ali Mostafavi from the Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman claim that this is the first time that such a designer system has been prepared for a particular metal cation.

  • Wouldn't it be nice to use solar- or wind-generated electricity to turn excess carbon dioxide—one of the gases trapping heat in Earth's atmosphere—into fuels and other useful chemicals? The process would store up the intermittent solar or wind energy in a form that could be used when and where it was needed, including in transportation applications, all while getting rid of some greenhouse gas. The trick is to find the right catalysts to facilitate the conversion of CO2 with high activity and minimal energy input.
