  • Meanwhile, Chinese researchers reported on April 17 in Environmental Science and Technology Letters that some industrial solvents may help bacteria share an antibiotic resistance gene. So-called “ionic liquids” are usually touted as safer substitutes for volatile organic solvents, which can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in household solutions, such as furniture polishes, paint stripper, and air fresheners.

  • The project developed a method with high extraction capacity for gold recovery, using the newest environmentally-friendly extraction reagents. In VTT experiments, it was possible to recover more than 90 percent of the metal solution dissolved from a circuit board with the help of functional ionic liquid. The method facilitates extraction of desired components from impurities.

  • With today’s atomic force microscopy (AFM) instrumentation, atomic resolution imaging can routinely be achieved in aqueous environments. But what about imaging in liquids other than water? Reporting in Nanotechnology, an international research team at the Nanoscale Function Group at University College Dublin (UCD), and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP), have shown that high-resolution imaging with dynamic AFM is possible even in highly viscous environments.
